Michigan Kid
When you are nine years old, every day brings a new adventure. This, at least, was my experience growing up in the woods next to Pettibone Lake in southern Michigan. It was a world of terrible monsters, epic games, and amazing journeys-along the way, you sometimes learned a thing or two.
"Mom, I want to ask you for something, but you have to promise not to tell anyone," I said as she sorted through the dirty clothes in front of the washing machine.
"What do you need, Dan-Tom-Tim?" she said as she worked. My mother often called me by the wrong first name, which she tried to correct rapidly. I was used to it.
"Do you promise?"
"Why do I have to keep your request a secret?" she looked at me sideways as she stooped over a pile of whites.
"It's for my float, and I don't want anyone stealing my idea-especially Caroline," I said, putting extra emphasis on her name.
"Oh, I see," she responded. "What is it you want?"
"Can I have a bottle of gas?" I asked.
"What kind of gas?" she said, dumping clothes into the machine.
"I don't know-like gasoline gas, the kind we put in the tractor." My mom turned and looked at me like I had two heads.
